September 18th, 1914 -Capital Was Almost Taken!

On August 3rd, 1914 the Germans had declared war on France, thanks to Belgium if they were able to hold back the troops back long enough for the English to be able to get to the cost and start to help out France. The German troops were starting to get close to the capital causing panic in pairs. Most of the government had left the capital, and the military was in shambles as the previous battles. The fact is that Germans were much more advanced in military affairs than the French causing massive casualties. In a week, they had lost 300,000 men and in a day 27,000 men! Some of the most ridiculous numbers in this war and probably in history! Due to this the Germans were in advantage and had been able to advance.

The Germans were 5o km away from Paris and getting ready to attack, but they were weaker than before. On August first, when Germany had declared war on Russia, there was support from the Austrian- Hungarian empire, but the battle was not going their way on the eastern front. What ended up happening was that the Germans had to send back troops to support the eastern front. This gave a small advantage to France as the Germans were now weaker. The civilians knew that they needed to do something to stall the Germans until the English could have come to give them suppose, so they used taxi cabs.  Over 600 taxi cabs got in line 50 km from the city on the battlefield and caused some defense for the French creating enough time for the English to come and suppose the French. On the night of the 8th of September, the French and English were able to outflank the German troops, and on the 9th of September, they retreated to north of the Aisne River digging creating trenches. From September 6–12, 1914 the great battle of the mars happened right outside of France. Even though the Germans are still not entirely out of the country, this was a victory for the French.

August 30th, 1914 – The Small Are Strong

It has been a few weeks since the invasion of Belgium by the Germans, but even with all the disaster, the small country has kept up the good fight.  Germany and France have had their good fare of arguments especially when France lost Alsace and Lorraine to Germany many grudges came to place.  On the 3rd of August German had declared war France. Germany was using Von Moltke version of the Schlieffen plan to attack France; this meant they would have to pass through Belgium and Luxembourg. Germany had sent their ultimatum to Belgium on August 2nd, 1914 to King Albert. It merely stated that they have the choice of fighting or being conquered letting them pass through the country. Belgium came to the offense of this, and the king sated “Belgium is a nation, not a road” and he himself took personal command of the armed forces. They even though being outnumbered with their small army of 43 000 men they started to put defenses up at the border, and the German invasion began on August 4th, 1914. The Germans hopes were that the Belgians would have remained peaceful and neutral and let them use their country, but this was not the case, and they fought back. When the small military was hit hard, and numbers were getting low, the citizens came to the rise. Thousands of citizens came helping to have their home back, but sadly many were killed. The Germans started to get fed up with the civilians takes and started executions to stop their efforts in getting their country back it has been reported that that around 6,000 innocent civilians have been executed. This is causing tension not just in Belgium but in other countries as well with lots of propaganda. It is is a hard time for this small country, but it goes to show that even though they are small does not mean they are weak, but in the end, they were not able to stop the Germans, and they were able to still get into France.

August 10th, 1914 – Don’t mess with Belgium

On August 4th, 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany! Belgium and England had always had a good relationship when Germany sent the ultimatum to Belgium. England got word of this, and they were not happy with what had happened. As Belgium, fought back they pushed the Germans plans back much more than what they had hoped. In their original plan, the Schlieffen plan, they had hoped that both England and Belgium remand natural. Things did not go as planned though when Belgium fought back with the invention, it pushed them back. England did not react well with the innovation on Belgium and decide to go to war! Now the Germans plans have been put back further than before! How will the rest of this play out now that England has gotten involved?

July 28th, 1914 – War Has Begun

It had been exactly one month since the death of Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, and his beloved wife Sophie, Duchess Von Hohenberg. Since then the assassination Prince has been jailed for his crimes, but this is still not enough for the Austro- Hungarian’s so they sent the ultimatum to be able to get the rest of the people involved and the black hand. Knowing that they had allies with the Germans and with an agreement of Berlin the ultimate was sent to Serbia on July 23, 1914. It simply stated that to let the Austro- Hungarian authorities to have safe passage in the country of Serbia to apprehend the members of the black hand and anyone in the involved with the assassination. There was a demand to be answered in 48 hours. This did not go the way the Austro- Hungarian wanted, the Serbian instead of cooperating with the request refused when to Russia for military help. The Austro- Hungarian took this matter to heart and on July 25th, 1914 the Austro- Hungarian began to mobilize their troops. The Serbians got note of this and as well got their troop in motion. Today, July 28th, 1914 Austria – Hungary has officially declared war on Serbia, and so the great war has begun.

June 28th, 1914 – Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

Today on June 28th, 1914 chaos happen in Sarajevo and mark a tragic day of the assassination of Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, and his beloved wife Sophie, Duchess Von Hohenberg. Sadly, not only did this loss leave three children, Maximilian, Prince of Hohenberg, Prince Ernst of Hohenberg, Princess Sophie of Hohenberg, orphaned but as well took the life of the three unborn siblings as Sophie was with child at the time of her death.

The Archduke and his wife had gone to Sarajevo to for a visit and to get to know the town and the people there; the thing is that he and his wife were not very well liked in that area for their views. They had gotten to the town early and did lots of sightseeing yesterday and felt it was safe enough to do the event. There was some speculation to do it or not as there have been many accidents in the last few weeks with other diplomats and other political figures, there was not much security in the event. It turned out that they were right when they were driving a member of the terrorist group, The Black Hands threw a boom to the car. It bounces off the car and hit some men, but the Archduke and Sophie were fine. Instead of leaving, the Archduke diced he wanted to visit the men who were hurt by the boom at the hospital.

In the commotion of everything the driver took the wrong route and had to stop to be able to reverse the car to get back on the right track. Unfortunately, they stopped right in front of the assassin, another member of the Black Hand, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip. According to witness, he was eating a sandwich as he saw the car drive up he walked up to the vehicle shooting twice in point black rang, it killed Sofie immediately and then shortly after being shot the Archduke as well. It has been reported that his last words were “Sophie, Sophie! Don’t die! Live for our children!”. Princip tried to commit suicide by drinking poison and jumping into the river but the authorities were able to fish him out, the poison did not work.

So, marks the tragic day of the death of the Archduke, many think this could have been all prevented if Sophie and Franz had listened and not gone today or if there was better security in the event but what has been done has been done. The Austro- Hungarian are enrage and the government is now trying to get permission from Serbia to enter their country and fined everyone responsible for the death of the archduke including the Black Hand.
