August 30th, 1914 – The Small Are Strong

It has been a few weeks since the invasion of Belgium by the Germans, but even with all the disaster, the small country has kept up the good fight.  Germany and France have had their good fare of arguments especially when France lost Alsace and Lorraine to Germany many grudges came to place.  On the 3rd of August German had declared war France. Germany was using Von Moltke version of the Schlieffen plan to attack France; this meant they would have to pass through Belgium and Luxembourg. Germany had sent their ultimatum to Belgium on August 2nd, 1914 to King Albert. It merely stated that they have the choice of fighting or being conquered letting them pass through the country. Belgium came to the offense of this, and the king sated “Belgium is a nation, not a road” and he himself took personal command of the armed forces. They even though being outnumbered with their small army of 43 000 men they started to put defenses up at the border, and the German invasion began on August 4th, 1914. The Germans hopes were that the Belgians would have remained peaceful and neutral and let them use their country, but this was not the case, and they fought back. When the small military was hit hard, and numbers were getting low, the citizens came to the rise. Thousands of citizens came helping to have their home back, but sadly many were killed. The Germans started to get fed up with the civilians takes and started executions to stop their efforts in getting their country back it has been reported that that around 6,000 innocent civilians have been executed. This is causing tension not just in Belgium but in other countries as well with lots of propaganda. It is is a hard time for this small country, but it goes to show that even though they are small does not mean they are weak, but in the end, they were not able to stop the Germans, and they were able to still get into France.
